Our accessibility commitment

Open Eyes teaches technology to people who are blind or visually impaired. This website has to work for them first. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

What we built in

  • Every page is plain, structured HTML and works with JavaScript turned off.
  • One main heading per page, headings in order, and labeled page regions for screen readers.
  • A skip link on every page and a clear focus outline for keyboard use.
  • Text and colors checked for contrast, with light, dark and night color options.
  • A Display button that lets you choose larger text, more spacing, underlined links and reduced motion. Choices are saved on your device only.
  • Forms with visible labels and error messages that name the problem, with no puzzle or image test to prove you are human.
  • Descriptions for the pictures that carry meaning. Decorative pictures are hidden from screen readers.
  • No autoplaying sound or video, and no accessibility overlay that changes how your own tools work.

How we checked

We test with automated tools (axe, an HTML validator and Lighthouse) and with a keyboard only. We have not yet had people who rely on screen readers every day review the whole site. We want that review and will welcome it.

Tell us about a problem

If something on this site is hard to use, or you need information in another format, use the contact form and choose “Accessibility problem or request”. A person will read it.
